MEGA Delivers Service and Savings

Electricity

MEGA periodically identifies an Energy Service Company (ESCO) in each utility service area through a competitive bidding process. The successful ESCO is then authorized to offer you a contract for providing electricity, natural gas or renewable power, which will still be delivered by one of the major utilities (NYSEG, National Grid, Central Hudson, Orange & Rockland, Rochester Gas & Electric, etc.) that is also responsible for maintenance of the system.

Contracts may be either an Index or Fixed Price; your ESCO representative or MEGA staff can help you determine which will best fit your needs.

Direct Energy Business (formerly Hess Corp.), is MEGA’s designated electricity supplier for customers in Central Hudson Gas and Electric utility territory.

Natural Gas

MEGA’s natural gas program works just like the electricity program: an Energy Service Company (ESCO) in each utility service area is identified through a competitive bidding process. The successful ESCO is then authorized to offer you a contract for providing natural gas, which will still be delivered by one of the major utilities (NYSEG, National Grid, etc.) responsible for maintenance and operation of the delivery system. Several contract options are available; your ESCO representative or MEGA staff can help you determine which will best fit your needs.

Solar Power

MEGA has partnered with SolarCity, identified through a public bidding process, to offer solar power pricing proposals that are stabilized for up to 20 years to MEGA customers. MEGA members will benefit from streamlined procurement for solar energy through SolarCity’s prequalified Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), which include a guarantee of solar kWh generation. Using the MEGA pre-qualified PPA helps ensure successful financing, virtually eliminates economic risk and expedites project timelines. More information about MEGA’s supply options is available in the FAQs and Solar City and MEGA Bring Clean, Affordable Power to New York State.

Hydro Power

MEGA members can now access the benefits of small hydroelectric facilities without owning or operating the plants themselves. After a competitive bidding process, MEGA selected Gravity Renewables Inc. to serve as preferred provider of energy from small hydroelectric plants across New York State. Gravity Renewables is able to offer MEGA members predictably-priced power not dependent on state incentives. Long-term fixed price contracts with small hydro plants can help stabilize energy budgets and preserve savings in a volatile energy market. More information about MEGA’s supply options is available in the FAQs and MEGA and Gravity Renewables.

Delivered Compressed Natural Gas (CNG): Savings versus propane or fuel oil

MEGA members that are not located on utility gas distribution service, or if their service is not adequate, can now consider using natural gas that is delivered by truck to their facilities. Through a competitive bid conducted in 2014, MEGA has partnered with Direct Energy Business (DEB) to make this service possible. It is also a way to jump start a fleet of municipal vehicles, trucks, or school buses that are converting to natural gas.

The economics are compelling: natural gas costs a fraction of fuel oil, diesel or other petroleum options. DEB will analyze your fuel requirements and provide an initial feasibility report to you. Next, a more detailed proposal would be developed, with specifics on how capital costs and implementation would be managed. All this will be done at no cost to the prospective customer/municipality. Community Choice Aggregation

Communities may now help their residents get better energy supply options through a new program called Community Choice Aggregation (CCA). MEGA is now offering professional support for CCA which was approved by the New York State Public Service Commission in April 2016.  CCA is a way for local governments to take advantage of aggregation and competition to help residential and other small consumers to get better energy pricing.  It will enhance consumer protection and be a chance for  communities to set energy priorities including incorporation of renewables and other value-added energy related services.  MEGA offers professional support as a CCA Administrator including designing programs, facilitating community education and outreach, coordinating competitive bidding and monitoring, and advising and ensuring compliance with NYS regulatory requirements.

More information about CCA can be found in the FAQs or by contacting Louise Gava, CCA Project Leader, lgava@megaenergy.org.

Curtailment Services

Whenever the electric grid is under stress, and/or prices are high, large accounts are asked to cut back usage to relieve the conditions. “Curtailment” as it is called, is an opportunity offered by the utilities and the NY Independent System Operator. Customers are paid for cutting usage, with notice, for a few hours, recognizing the value they have created for other system users. A Curtailment Services Provider will keep some of the payment as a consulting fee.

Now, MEGA is able to offer our customers a Curtailment Services Provider to help our participants get the best value out of the opportunities. Our competitive procurement identified EnergyConnect, Inc., a division of Johnson Controls, Inc. as offering the most generous payment-sharing with customers, as well as being eminently qualified to provide the needed management services.

Curtailment is an option only for larger accounts. ECI will make an initial determination of eligibility at no cost, and explain the protocols and requirements to register for and participate in the program. Click info@energynext.com to take the first step.

Renewable Energy Credits (RECs)

MEGA services include pricing for Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) in the procurement process for electricity. RECs derived from solar, wind and hydropower sources, allow customers to increase their personal or institutional support of sustainable sources by acquiring RECs to cover a portion or all of their electric usage.

For information on purchase of RECs contact Gordon Boyd at EnergyNext, Inc., 518.580.9244 or info@energynext.com.

Technical Assistance & Energy Feasibility Studies

MEGA provides technical assistance to member municipalities to research energy issues. While the level of assistance available varies, it is often useful to our customers in assessing the initial feasibility of a concept or a project under consideration. These services are provided by our energy consultants, EnergyNext, Inc.

For information contact Ron Feldstein, MEGA’s President and CEO, rfeldstein@megaenergy.org.

Energy Management Training Institute
